Italy | Como | July 2019 | 2 days |
Immediately after my Switzerland trip I visited the Italian side of the Alps, specifically the city of Como. The city of Lugano is rather close to Como and they are equally beautiful and worth visiting hence my plan to visit both.
Como
Renowned for its lake side villas and celebrities hotspot preference, Como felt very similar to Lugano hence I’ll keep this post short and sweet given how I’ve written about Lugano last month.
Lake Como is quite the sight and at the time of travelling it was buzzing with activity… sailboats, floatplanes, kayaking and swimming.
The landing and taking-off by the floatplanes felt quite remarkably as I had never witnessed this before in real life and at such proximity.
Even more remarkable was a ‘skipping’ motion of sorts where the floatplanes during landing would ‘skip’, like a flat rock tossed into a lake, a few times until they came to a halt, I am not sure if such was intended or not but it looked routinely done by the pilots as far as I could tell.
Whilst on Como I visited the Tempio Voltiano - a museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta’s life work. An Italian inventor known for creating the first true electric battery.
There is also a sculpture monument dedicated to Alessandro Volta that is worth visiting if you’re into art and even if you’re not the location alone warrants a visit, as it’s amazingly located “in the middle of the bay… in the lake”. The sculpture is, quite fittingly, named “Life Electric”.
Sadly I didn’t have enough time to do any hiking in Como and instead was confined to the lake area. It’s definitely worth strolling around the lake as you can then walk past elegant and well kept villas.
The gorgeous surrounding mountains in the distance make for a beautiful landscape whilst strolling around the lake and city, and not so much in the distance you can contemplate the well pruned and maintained gardens and parks which in the summer time looked particularly majestic.
